Changing Your Session Tier

A
Written by Andreas H

Your session tier is the plan level that sets how much monthly churn volume your subscription covers. Each paid tier covers churn up to a certain amount of cancelled revenue per month — from up to $5,000/mo all the way up to $90,000/mo — and unlocks the full set of churn.io features. This article explains how tiers work and walks you through changing yours.

How session tiers work

churn.io pricing is based on the churn volume you expect to handle each month. The higher your monthly cancelled revenue, the higher the tier you need.

  • Free — no cost. Includes 1 active cancellation flow and up to 2 team members, shows the "Powered by Churn.io" badge, and does not include A/B testing or custom domains.

  • Pro tiers — ten levels covering monthly churn volume from up to $5,000/mo through up to $90,000/mo. Every Pro tier includes unlimited active flows, unlimited team members, A/B testing, custom domains, and no branding badge.

  • Custom — for higher volumes. Pricing is quoted by our team, so picking it opens a booking step rather than charging you automatically.

Each Pro tier can be billed Monthly or Yearly. Yearly billing saves 20% compared to paying month to month.

Changing your tier

You manage your tier from your billing settings.

Step 1: Open your billing settings.

  1. Open the menu under your profile and choose Billing.

  2. Find the Current plan card at the top of the page.

Step 2: Open the plan picker.

  • On a Free plan, click Upgrade to Pro.

  • On a Pro plan, click Upgrade plan to move to a higher tier, or Change plan to move up or down or switch your billing cycle.

Step 3: Pick your tier and billing cycle.

  1. Use the slider to choose the churn volume tier you expect for the coming month.

  2. Choose Monthly or Yearly · save 20%.

  3. Review the price and the timing note shown below the slider, then click Confirm change (or Confirm upgrade).

If you're moving from Free to a paid tier, you'll be asked to add a payment method in the same window before you can confirm.

When changes take effect

The timing depends on the direction of your change:

  • Upgrades take effect immediately. Proration is shown at confirmation, and your billing date stays the same.

  • Downgrades take effect at the end of your current billing cycle. You keep your current tier until then, and there's no charge today.

  • Switching between Monthly and Yearly takes effect on your next billing date.

When a downgrade or billing-cycle switch is scheduled, a banner appears on the Billing page showing the new tier and when it applies. You can undo it any time before it takes effect by clicking Cancel this change in that banner.

Limits when downgrading

churn.io measures your actual churn volume over a rolling 30-day window from your connected Stripe account. This verified volume becomes the floor for downgrades — you can't drop to a tier whose ceiling is below the churn volume you're already handling.

If you select a tier that's too low, you'll see a warning that your verified volume exceeds the selected tier's ceiling, and the change will be blocked. Choose a tier that covers your recent volume, or stay on your current plan.

⚠️ Trials can't be downgraded

While you're on a trial, you can't downgrade to a lower tier or switch your billing cycle. You can make those changes once your trial ends and billing begins.

Custom plans and moving to Free

If your churn volume is higher than the top Pro tier, slide all the way to Custom and click Book a Call. This opens a scheduling link and lets our team know you're interested — you'll stay on your current plan until we finalise pricing and activate the custom plan for you.

To leave a paid plan entirely, open Change plan and click Downgrade to Free. You'll keep access to your paid features until the end of your current billing period.

💡 Tip: check your usage first

Before changing tiers, open the Usage tab on your billing page to see your verified churn volume against your current tier's ceiling. It's the easiest way to pick the right tier and avoid hitting the downgrade floor.
